Guide - How to create your own icing sprinkles!

Right now it is very fashionable to have exciting glazes with lots of effects, dots and drips in different colors. This can be created by adding glaze sprinkles in or on your glaze. Here is a complete guide to some different approaches to creating this yourself at home in your pottery workshop.

Glaze sprinkles on top of brush glaze
The easiest way.

1.Dry a thin layer of powder glaze, for example on a plastic lid or a paper plate.

2. Break apart/crush the glaze into pieces or flakes in the sizes you desire.

3. Brush your creation with brush glaze and sprinkle on your homemade glaze sprinkles before the glaze has dried so that the sprinkles stick.

Glaze sprinkles in powder glaze

1. Place glaze in a container and let dry.

2. Crush it to the size you desire.

3. Place them in a bowl/plate in a fairly thin and even layer and sear the pieces.

4. Check them after firing.

If they melted and stuck to the bowl, it was too hot for that glaze. If they dissolved when you put them in water, the temperature was too low.

Test yourself as glazes have different conditions!

5. Mix the icing sprinkles into your powdered icing.

Test on a small scale and make sample pieces before scaling up.

It takes a little experimentation to find the right temperature for your particular glazes. Good luck!
