At Lervis weekend courses, you get to experience the entire ceramic journey – from clay to finished product.

The course is suitable for those at the beginning of their ceramic journey. Teaching is conducted through group instruction on the various stages, as well as individual guidance and feedback based on your personal skill level. You have great opportunities to develop if you take multiple courses.

COURSE STRUCTURE
You will learn the basics of wheel throwing, trimming, and glazing. If there is interest, I will also demonstrate how to throw specific items, such as mugs, bowls, plates, and candlesticks. You will also get to create pieces without the wheel, for example by coiling, slab building, sculpting, etc.

Everything depends on your current skill level, and I will help you develop further.

The teaching consists mostly of practical work under the guidance of Veronica. Everyone has their own pottery wheel for the entire course.

We will cover:

  • the basics of centering and shaping simple vessels on the wheel
  • the basics of trimming (finishing the underside of the thrown pieces)
  • the basics of coiling and slab building (depending on the participants' preferences, these steps may be skipped)
  • practical glazing, knowledge of different glazes and colors
  • the work process from clay to finished ceramics

Feel free to prepare by getting inspired by what you would specifically like to create during the course. If you are a complete beginner, you can watch videos where others show how to center and throw (you will, of course, also learn this on-site). Wear clothes and shoes that it doesn't matter if you get clay on; you can borrow an apron. If you have long hair, it is practical to have it tied back.

You bring your own lunch for both days; we provide afternoon coffee.

VERONICA THANE
Veronica is a practicing ceramicist in Habo. With three years of education in the field and artistic training as well, she combines color and form with material, texture, and craft technique in functional ceramics as well as sculptural objects. See more of her work at studo.thane on Instagram

SATURDAY 10-16
We start the day with a round of introductions and go through the plan for the weekend.

  • Introduction and theoretical overview of form and material
  • Practical step-by-step instruction in centering and shaping on the wheel
  • Individual guidance with feedback and adjustment of technique, tips, and tricks
  • Review of coiling and slab building for those who wish

SUNDAY 10-15
We start the day by looking at all our created pieces and sharing feedback from yesterday.

  • Analysis of the possibilities for yesterday's thrown pieces
  • Practical step-by-step instruction in trimming
  • Individual guidance with feedback and adjustment of technique, tips, and tricks
  • We finish all pieces by attaching handles, decorating, applying engobe, etc.
  • Review of coiling and slab building for those who wish
  • Preparation of all pieces for firing

GLAZING approx. 2 hours
After the weekend, the pieces must be bisque fired before it is time to glaze, so we will book a session for this a few weeks later. After that, it takes another approx. 3-4 weeks (while the pottery is glaze-fired) before you can come and pick up your finished works.

  • If you are a beginner, we recommend using a clay that works for several different techniques. One that contains approximately 25% chamotte with a grain size of up to 0.2mm.
